Driver Arrested After Brief Pursuit on Flat Tires

Hingham, MA - A 20 year old Randolph man was arrested Friday after leading police on a brief pursuit that ended when a Sergeant struck the car in an attempt to disable after it drove on two flat tires, all over the road and over a sidewalk fully out of control. The driver and Sergeant were evaluated and released from the hospital.

On July 30, 2021 at 1:13pm, Weymouth Police reported a car had fled the scene of a crash and was last seen heading into Hingham on Fort Hill St. As Officers began checking the area, a motorist reported the car was driving on a flat tire on Beal St. and was driving all over the road.  A Sergeant in an unmarked police car spotted the car turning onto Lincoln St. (Rte. 3A) and turned on his emergency lights and siren to stop the car. The car initially pulled over and drove over the curb onto the sidewalk on Lincoln St.  The driver opened his door, leaned out the window looking back at the police car, then closed the door and drove away.

As the car drove away it swerved over the fog line grinding against the curb with both right side tires flat and other car parts coming off landing along the road. The car continued on Lincoln St. (Rte. 3A) into Weymouth (Lincoln St. becomes Bridge St. in Weymouth). It began weaving back and forth over the yellow center lines and almost struck several oncoming cars. It appeared to be traveling completely out of control near the U-Haul building at 666 Bridge St. then drove completely off the road onto the sidewalk. It almost struck a utility pole and began sliding across the road. With heavy traffic ahead, including a utility work crew in view, the Sergeant determined the car need to be stopped immediately. In an effort to disable the car, the Sergeant drove into the driver's side rear door with the front of his cruiser. This impact disabled the car in the road.

Weymouth Officers and additional Hingham Officers arrived on scene. The driver refused to follow their instructions and he continued to reach down under the seat out of view. He eventually held up his cell phone. A short time later he followed the Officers instructions and stepped out of the car. He was placed under arrest by Hingham Officers. Officers noticed his lethargic demeanor, slurred speech and the strong odor burning marijuana coming from him. Both the driver and the Sergeant were transported to South Shore Hospital for evaluation. Both were released a short time later.

The car, a 2007 Nissan Sentra, and the unmarked police car, a 2019 Ford Police Interceptor, were towed from the scene.

Arrested was Sidney Clinton Borno, age 20, of 10 Royal St., Randolph, MA. He was charged with: 1) Operating Under the Influence of Drugs 2) Negligent Operation 3) Failing to Stop for Police 4) Marked Lanes Violation. He was released on personal recognizance to appear at Hingham District Court on August 2, 2021. A request was submitted to the Registry of Motor Vehicles that his license be suspended as an immediate threat. ### Contact P.I.O. Lt. Steven Dearth
