Resident's Bank Account Hacked Using Public Wi-Fi

Hingham, MA - A resident reported making purchases using a Wi-Fi at a hotel led to her bank accounts hacked and $24,000 being stolen. The resident said she had been staying at an out of state hotel in December and used the hotel’s Wifi service to make some purchases online using her checking account.  Within days, she realized someone wired $1,500 from her checking account. The thieves then transferred $15,000 from her savings account to her checking account. It was then wired to an out of state bank where it was withdrawn. Days later, they made more wire transfers to individuals from the her checking account. The total stolen from her checking account was $24,000. Her local bank has now refunded her money. We remind you to always use secure Wi-Fi network, especially when making purchases and banking (P.I.O. Sgt. Steven Dearth).
