Hingham, MA – A Rockland man faces several charges after a crash Monday morning including driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and carrying a firearm under while under the influence.
On Monday, July 17, 2017 at 11:12 am, Officers responded to report that a car that struck a utility pole near 432 Gardner St. They found a utility pole snapped near the top and a damaged 2010 Kia Optima nearby. The driver of the Kia was not injured. Officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage from his breath and he was very unsteady on his feet. He denied he had been drinking but admitted to having taken Gabapentin. He was unable to pass a series of field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest.
Witnesses at the scene described the car as speeding and weaving just before the crash. Two witnesses said just before the crash they pulled to the side of the road to let the Kia pass to avoid being struck. They also said after the crash the driver removed a handgun from his waist and put it in the trunk.
Officers found a loaded .40 caliber handgun in the trunk, a bottle of whiskey that was 1/3 empty on the passenger floor and two pipes with marijuana residue in the center console.
Arrested was Kevin M. Sullivan, age 54, of 61 Pine Haven Circle, Rockland, MA. He was charged with: 1) Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol 2) Operating Under the Influence of Drugs 3) Operating to Endanger 4) Carrying a Firearm While Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs 5) Driving With An Open Container of Alcohol 6) Marked Lanes Violation. He was licensed to possess the firearm.
He was booked at the Hingham Police station and later released on $500.00 cash bail. He was arraigned at Hingham District Court on July 18. ### PIO Sgt. Steven Dearth
