[ARCHIVED] Use Caution Swimming in Hingham Waters

Lion’s Mane Jellyfish

Hingham MA – Numerous jellyfish were spotted this weekend throughout Hingham Harbor, including the Inner Harbor. They resemble the Lion’s Mane jellyfish see in other nearby harbors. The reported sightings in Hingham describe the jellyfish’s umbrella or body from eight (8) inches to two (2) feet in diameter with many long tentacles.

On at least one occasion, a Hingham resident was stung and experienced something similar to a brief electric shock followed by a stinging sensation. She treated it with a jellyfish sting kit and vinegar. Medical care was not necessary.

Please exercise caution when swimming or consider avoiding the water during jellyfish season. Below is an image of a Lion’s Mane jellyfish in Hingham’s Outer Harbor near Hingham Yacht Club. If experiencing complications from a jellyfish sting hail the Harbormaster on VHF 16 or call 911.
