[ARCHIVED] Man Arrested After Allegedly Pointing Gun at Man in Park

A man was arrested after he allegedly pointed a gun and punched a man inside Bare Cove Park after a dispute that began over marijuana. The man was arrested inside the 484 acre park hours later after being located by a SWAT team.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10:05pm a 54 year old homeless man called to 9-1-1 to report he had been punched in the face and a handgun pointed at his chest by another homeless man inside Bare Cove Park. The victim said both men know each other and live in separate tents inside Bare Cove Park. The victim said the suspect asked him to get him some marijuana. After the victim gave him the marijuana, the suspect picked up a handgun. He became aggressive and pointed the gun at the victim’s chest. The victim left the area and a short time later they met again in different area of the park. An argument began between the two men and the suspect allegedly punched the victim in the face. The victim then called 9-1-1 to report both incidents.

Officers were able to contact the suspect by phone who claimed he was now in Quincy. He hung up and turned his phone off. Additional resources, including the Metro-LEC SWAT team as well as K9’s and a drone, were brought to the scene to assist in locating the suspect. Residents in the area were notified using a reverse 9-1-1 system through the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department.

At 2:56am the suspect was located in the park. He was arrested without incident by members of the SWAT team. A handgun was not found in his immediate possession. Arrested was Thomas P. Walwood, age 55, formerly of Quincy, MA. He was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (firearm) and Assault and Battery. He was held overnight on $500 cash bail and arraigned at Hingham District Court on June 6. After his arraignment, he was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Monday June 11, 2018.

Investigators are continuing to search for the handgun in the park. Bare Cove Park is a public park open during the daylight hours only and camping is not allowed. The Hingham Police will continue to patrol the park and remove anyone found violating that regulation. ### Contact PIO Sgt. Steven Dearth
