[ARCHIVED] Elderly Resident Victim of Microsoft Computer Repair Scam

A 79 year old Hingham woman fell victim to a common scam known as the "Microsoft Computer Repair Scam".

The woman reported to Police she was the victim of identity theft. The woman said several days earlier she received a phone call from a number which listed as unknown on her caller ID. The caller said he was an agent of Microsoft and said they found a virus on her computer. He offered to help fix it and asked for her computer password and credit card number to be able to gain access remotely to her computer. She gave him this information.

The next day, the man called back and said her credit card company refused to process the charge and asked for her debit card number. She gave him the number.

Two days later, the man called again from a different number and asked for her checking account number and her Social Security number. She gave him this information.

At this point, she realized it was a scam and called a family member. With the help of her family, they canceled all their accounts and put alerts on her information. She was also told to contact the Social Security Office and IRS to put alerts on her information.

As of the report, no money was taken, however she is at high risk of identity theft. This is a common scam commonly referred as the “Microsoft Scam” or the “Computer Repair Scam”.
