Hingham, MA – Family members found old hand grenade while clearing out apartment Monday and moved it outside. It was picked up by the State Police Bomb Squad. 

On January 7, 2019 at 4:05pm Officers were sent to the Linden Ponds (a gated senior residential complex) for a report of a hand grenade that had been found by the family of a 95 year old resident who had recently moved to a different unit. The 95 year old resident had served in the military. A family member moved the hand grenade and other items that were found with it such as possible live munitions, to a wooded area several hundred yards away from the building down an embankment. They called police.

Due to the items already having been moved away from the building, Officers did not need to evacuate and residents. A member of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad arrived and took possession of the hand grenade and other items for disposal. It is unknown if the grenade was live. Officers also checked for any other similar items in the apartment. We recommend people not handle any suspected explosive items.
